Measuring Cooling using Tonnage<\/h3>\n

An air conditioner doesn\u2019t create cold, since \u201ccold\u201d isn\u2019t a type of energy. What an AC does is remove heat from the air to lower its temperature. Therefore, measuring the power of an air conditioner requires measuring the amount of heat it removes from the air.<\/p>\n

The standard measuring unit for air conditioning system, commercial and residential, is the British Thermal Unit<\/em> (BTU). One BTU is equal to the amount of heat required to change the temperature of a specific amount of water by one degree Fahrenheit. This is similar to the calorie. For example, if you look at the stats of window air conditioning units on sale in a store, you\u2019ll see the BTUs the system removes per hour, such as 5,000 BTUs.<\/p>\n

Larger residential and commercial air conditioners remove enough BTUs from an air that it\u2019s easier to classify them using a simpler metric, in this case \u201ca ton.\u201d One ton is equal to 12,000 BTUs. This is the amount of heat necessary to melt one ton of ice\u2014and that\u2019s where the name \u201cton\u201d comes from. So a 25 ton air conditioner is a unit that removes 300,000 BTUs from a space per an hour<\/p>\n

Residential systems range from 1.5 to 5 tons. Anything higher than this falls into the commercial range.
