What Does Preventive Heating Maintenance Actually Prevent?

This is the time of year when we urge our customers to arrange for routine preventive heating maintenance. (The easiest way to do this is to sign up for our Comfort Plan, which delivers regular heating and air conditioning maintenance along with some other great benefits.) This inspection and tune-up is one of the most useful preparations you can make for your home for the upcoming winter.

If you want to know what preventive means in preventive heating maintenance, we can give you a list of exactly what it prevents:

An Abrupt Heating System Breakdown

The last thing you want to happen during one of the coldest days of the winter is to have your heater stop working entirely. But that’s the time when a shaky heater is most likely to fail, since it’s putting in the most work. Preventive maintenance aims to stop this from happening; once you’ve had maintenance, there’s little chance of your heater collapsing on you mid-winter. (Plus, you will avoid numerous smaller repairs, helping you to save money.)

A Spike in Energy Bills

The costs to keep a home warm through a New Jersey winter can be high. But they’ll be higher than they need to be if you allow your heater to trudge forward without fall maintenance. A heater will begin to rapidly wear down and drain more power if it misses its regular tune-ups and inspections.

A Short Life for the Heater

Depending on the type of heater you have, you can expect it to last from between 10 to 30 years. But a heater that doesn’t have routine maintenance will probably not reach halfway to its estimated service life. Annual maintenance will help see that you receive the best return on your original investment in the heating system.
